Moving on from God?

15 June, 2006

God is a human construct.

What we mean by ‘God’ has changed significantly over the centuries since the early creation myths first tried to explain the things that humans didn’t understand by positing a superior Creator being.

This leaves us, especially if we rely on Judaeo-Christian tradition and texts, with a messy God that is internally inconsistent: one moment vengeful and violent, the next moment like a caring Father…

How can we re-evaluate this human construct that is God?

Can we come up with a version that is relevant in the 21st century? A version that is coherent?

Does this mean moving beyond the literalist notion of God as a person who exists independently of us and with whom we can have a relationship?

If so, where to?
