Religion – rooted in the past

20 January, 2007

“As a scientist, I’m always prepared to change my mind when there is new evidence or new ideas. But I think it’s really important that we adopt a spirit of openness to the possibility of progress in the realm of the spiritual, just as we do in science and technology. After all, the last 300 years have witnessed an enormous advance in science, technology, material well-being, health and economics. But most people’s ideas of religion or spirituality tend to be rooted in the past, in some cases in ancient texts that were written 2000 years ago. They don’t seem to have moved on very much.
